Do you remember the first time you were in a school running race? The heart racing, the feeling of butterflies in the stomach, maybe the nervous sweats hit you or you suddenly feel like you need to dash off for a quick toilet break.
I would feel the pressure every time! Even though I knew it was just a race, I still went through all the emotions and feelings of the moment.
Then suddenly, “bang!”, the start gun has sounded and you’re away down the track! Adrenaline surging through every part of your body. Your mind willing your legs to go faster and your lungs to just BREATH!
At primary(elementary) school I was always in the top 3 fastest in our school. Well, my mate Reihana, also known as “Bub” always came first, so it was always a battle between myself and my other best mate Daniel to see who would come second.
I think the added pressure of potentially failing in my race would add to the feelings and emotions running through me prior to the gun going off.
The doubts and fears all shouting louder the closer the race was to starting. The shouts drowning out the fact that I can and will run this race with everything I’ve got!
I wonder if sometimes our lives can reflect that very thing. The feelings, the thoughts, the emotions that shout to us can be the very things that are holding us back from running our race, from going after all that God has purposed for our lives. Whether we’ve accepted the reality of Jesus in our lives yet or not, every one of us has been born with a great purpose no matter what the situation of life we came into at birth.
The doubts and fears that come along with the thought of having to run a race that is set out for us can often be extremely overwhelming.
Too many people, too many Christians, are still sitting side-lined because they’ve yet to overcome the feelings and emotions, the doubts and fears.
I say “yet” because I believe that no matter how long ago God spoke to you about the purpose of your life, or how distant you feel from your purpose because of the mistakes you’ve made in life, there is always time to get in the race God has laid out for you.
This is where the Holy Spirit comes into play. He’s not just there like a parent in the stands shouting at you, “get in the race boy/girl, stop mucking around, hurry up!”, no, He’s in it with us, He’s in deep! His power very power is flowing through our veins, so when we have the inevitable feelings of doubt, and the shouts of “you can’t do it” begin to get louder and louder, I believe the Holy Spirit is ready and waiting to take on the challenge of a purpose filled life with you.
He doesn’t leave you alone.
He doesn’t leave you out to dry.
He doesn’t push you in and watch from afar.
He’s right there with you. In your deepest, darkest hour, in the beginning, the middle and the end. He doesn’t leave us nor does He forsake us.
So what is the race that God has called you to run?
What is shouting at you? Is it your past? your failure? The things that have happened to you and limited you?
Why do you find it hard to even approach the start line?
If I had allowed the circumstances of my past to dictate the trajectory of my future, I wouldn’t be sitting here today writing this blog. The past hurts of being sexually abused as a young boy, the countless mistakes of teen and early 20’s years mixed with partying, drinking and drugs, the heartache of discovering I was the reason my wife and I weren’t able to conceive a child and then having to go down the path of IVF. I could list so many things that could have disqualified me from running my race, but I serve a God who has qualified me! And He is greater than anything I could put on that list. That was and is committed to me living my best life.
We are all called to overcome. To do something significant with our lives in our short time here on earth.
Romans 8:31-39 (msg) reads, So what do you think? With God on our side like this, how can we lose? If God didn’t hesitate to put everything on the line for us, embracing our condition and exposing himself to the worst by sending his own Son, is there anything else he wouldn’t gladly and freely do for us? And who would dare tangle with God by messing with one of God’s chosen? Who would dare even to point a finger? The one who died for us – who was raised to life for us! – is in the presence of God at this very moment sticking up for us. Do you think anyone is going to be able to drive a wedge between us and Christ’s love for us? There is no way! Not trouble, not hard times, not hatred, not hunger, not homelessness, not bullying threats, not backstabbing, not even the worst sins listed in Scripture:
They kills us in cold blood because they hate you. We’re sitting ducks; they pick us off one by one.
None of this fazes us because Jesus loves us. I’m absolutely convinced that nothing – nothing living of dead, angelic of demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable – absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us.
My prayer is that today, as you read this, you’d be encourage to stand up, stand strong, take hold of the knowledge that God is with you, and get yourself into the race He’s prepared for you!
Because on the other side of your breakthrough, your race, is somebody else’s freedom.
In Acts 20 it says “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has for me.”
It’s time to run! Let’s not be a people that sit sidelined, comfortable with looking after our own lives and content with what we have stored up for ourselves.
It’s time to overcome!
